Mangal Prabhat Lodha stages a dharna in front of Australian consulate's Mumbai office
BJP M.LA. Mangal Prabhat Lodha stages a Dharna in front of Australian Consulate's Mumbai office.

BJP MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha alongwith more than 200 BJP supporters and furious residents staged a Dharna in front of the Australian Consulate's office at Maker Chambers VI, Nariman Point on 1June 2009 in order to protest against the recent racial attacks on Indian students in Australia. This Dharna was staged to draw the State and Central Government's attention to this grim situation. Mangal Prabhat Lodha and his supporters through the Dharna demanded the following things.

  • Stern and immediate action should be taken against these attackers.
  • Australian government should draft and disclose an action plan to ensure such attacks are not repeated in the future.
  • A special protection cell should be formed in regions with high density population of Indians.

Mangal Prabhat Lodha added that there have been more than 100 such attacks on Indian students in the past one year and it's a shame that still nothing has been done to stop it. He further mentioned that there are around 95000 Indian students in Australia and so big amount of the educational revenue comes from India. Indians have become soft target there because of our government's inability to act. If this would have happened to American students, immediately after the first incidence the entire world would have protested and condemned it.

On 29th May 2009, a delegation led by Mangal Prabhat Lodha alongwith Siddharth Gamare, Sanjay Bedia and others had met the Australian Consulate officials. As the officials failed to provide any reasonable explanation on the issue, Mangal Prabhat Lodha registered a complaint with Australian Consulate's Delhi Office. After the intervention by the Australian Consulate's Delhi office Mangal Prabhat Lodha was given an appointment on 1st June 2009.

Mangal Prabhat Lodha further mentioned that it's the prime responsibility of the Australian government to ensure the safety of Indian students studying there. If our demands are not considered and if the situation does not change, thousands of Indians will take the road and ensure that the office of Australian Consulate is closed.
