Maharashtra Governor to discuss the ban on cow slaughter with State Government

Movement to protect cows in the state has gathered momentum, with the Mumbai governor planning to take up the law for cow slaughter ban with the Chief Minister. The Governor assured BJP MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha that he will discuss the 18-year long pending ban that it yet to be made into a law. Led by BJ MLA MP Lodha, a group including members from Jain community and Animal Welfare Association today submitted a memorandum to the Governor in this regard.

Mangal Prabhat Lodha MLA informed the Governor that the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly had passed a bill 18 years ago against cow slaughter in the state. After being sent to the Centre, the President had requested a report on the bill three times. The state government has failed to produce this report since 18 years. Besides stressing on the importance of the Cow Protection Bill, Lodha also pointed out that farmers and the environment will benefit from it.

Lodha has requested the Governor to ask the State government to produce the report within the next 30 days. In the memorandum, MLA Lodha reminded the Governor that he had raised this issue in the Assembly last month, but the government did not respond. Lodha also pointed out that several states in the country already have a law against cow slaughter while Maharashtra government has only been avoiding it.
